Somehow, this triggers parents to return their child's instrument rental as if the two must go hand in hand. The sad truth is that the two months of summer break are the best time for a music student to gain ground and make incredible progress on their instrument!

As a music teacher, I often get asked by parents why their children should continue playing their musical instruments during the summer break. There are a few things to consider when making this decision.

• One is the cognitive benefits of continued practice. Playing an instrument requires focus and concentration and can transfer these skills to other areas of learning. During the summer, keeping up with music lessons can help your child stay sharp and ready for the new school year.

• Another consideration is muscle memory. Playing a musical instrument is a physical activity that requires coordination and dexterity. If your child takes a break from playing over the summer, they may find it more difficult to regain those skills come fall.

• It's always more fun as your child progresses on their instrument. So without all of the school responsibilities, an incredible amount of progress can be made over the short two months of summer break!
